Preserving Memories with Memento & Co.

Updated: May 5

The Magic of Sublimation (It’s not just "printing")

Most people assume that making a metal print is like using a giant office printer to spray ink onto a sheet of aluminum. If we did that, the image would just sit on the surface—meaning it could be scratched, chipped, or peeled off with a fingernail.

Sublimation is a completely different beast. It’s a chemical process where we turn science into art.

1. The Transformation: From Solid to Gas

We start by printing your image onto specialized transfer paper using high-end sublimation inks. At room temperature, these inks are solid. But the magic happens when we move to the heat press.

I bring the press up to approximately 400°F (204°C). Under that intense heat and heavy pressure, the solid ink does something incredible: it skips the liquid phase entirely and turns into a gas.

2. Opening the Pores

At the same time the ink is turning into gas, the specialized polyester coating on our premium aluminum sheets is reacting to the heat. The "pores" of that coating open up wide, like a thirsty plant waiting for rain.

3. The Infusion

This is the "Operational Elegance" moment. Because the ink is now a gas and the metal's coating is open, the ink literally infuses itself into the surface. It’s not sitting on the metal; it is becoming part of the metal.

As soon as the heat is removed and the aluminum cools, those pores snap shut, trapping the color permanently inside.

Why This Matters for Your Home

Because the image is deep inside the coating, a Memento print is:

  • Scratch-Resistant: You can’t "scratch off" the photo because it’s not on the surface.

  • Waterproof: You can wipe it down with a damp microfiber cloth (or even Windex) without ever worrying about the ink running.

  • Archival & Fade-Resistant: These prints are rated to stay vibrant for 100+ years. It’s a piece of art that survives the "real life" of a busy household.

The Studio Standard

Every time I pull a fresh 8x10 portrait or a custom business sign off the press here in Red Deer, I’m still blown away by the depth and the "glow" that only metal can provide. When you hold a Memento piece, you aren't just holding a photo—you’re holding a scientifically preserved moment.

Creating Lasting Connections

In a world where memories can fade, our prints stand as a testament to the moments that matter most. Imagine displaying your favorite family photo, a snapshot of your beloved pet, or a cherished memory with a loved one. Each piece tells a story, a narrative that you can revisit time and again.

The Emotional Impact of Art

Art has a unique way of connecting us to our emotions. It can evoke joy, nostalgia, and even comfort. When you choose to turn your digital memories into tangible art, you’re not just creating decor; you’re crafting a legacy.
